Shlisselburg fortress was built on Orekhovy Island almost 700 years ago. The fortress was rebuilt many times. The impregnable walls of a polygonal fortress with seven towers are located close to the water around the island. For 300 years, the fortress was an outpost on the border with Sweden, until the Swedes managed to recapture it for 90 years. During the Northern War, Peter I returned the island of Russia, after which for 200 years the castle served as a prison for especially dangerous criminals and gained fame as one of the worst prisons in the Russian Empire.
Valaam is the largest of the islands of the Valaam archipelago in the northern part of Lake Ladoga. The famous Orthodox shrines are situated on its territory, where for centuries truly unique examples of Russian church architecture have been preserved.
Respect for tradition and skilled craftsmanship define this village as an unparalleled insight into a different side of Russian history. Enjoy rustic Russian cuisine on a traditional midday picnic and explore the village.
At the heart of Europe’s second largest lake – Lake Onega – sits Kizhi Island, home to the Kizhi Pogost UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marvel at its open-air museum of wooden architecture, a truly unique spectacle.
Today, after passing through the Volga-Baltic Canal, our ship will stop in the village of Goritsy, surrounded by forests of the Vologda region. This land is famous for its monasteries, which history is closely connected with the history of Russia.
